Key Actions

Key action scores show the overall maturity of state efforts to build math pathways. Building mathematics pathways takes more than a single policy—the pieces have to work together. Each key action has a set of structural indicators that describe the work in that area, and each key action score takes into account the average of the structural indicator scores within it to show how far implementation has moved from early planning toward routine, supported practice.

‍Select a Key Action below to view implementation levels across the country or click a state on the map to explore its key action score and the indicators that contribute to it. Access data on Washington D.C. by clicking on any other state and then choosing Washington D.C from  the drop down menu as it does not appear on the map.

Key Action Score Definitions

0 = Not evident: No credible evidence the state is acting on the Key Action

1 = Exploring: Early planning/convening; problem definition; options being considered; no formal decisions

2 = Installing: Formal infrastructure is being built (guidance drafted, pilots designed, funding set aside, data elements defined, contracts/roles set)

3 = Initial implementation: The work is happening in practice in at least some places (districts/colleges), with feedback loops and improvement cycles

4 = Implemented at scale / institutionalized: Statewide (or near-statewide) adoption, embedded in routine operations (requirements, funding streams, reporting, accountability)

Structural Indicators Evidence Strength

0 = None: No evidence

1 = Low: Stated intent / draft / limited example (e.g., draft guidance; one district doing it without state support)

2 = Medium: Formalized + operating in some sites (policy adopted or guidance issued + implementation occurring in pilots/regions)

3 = High: Operationalized + supported for scale (statewide coverage or strong enabling supports like funding + reporting + technical assistance)
