Nevada
Nevada is a Launch Years Initiative state. Nevada has created new math pathways recommendations, which include new courses, mindset shifts, standardized math placement, and a modern STEM pathway.

Next Steps Nevada
Nevada's new recommendations focus on four critical and connected areas of work.
Governing authority: Nevada State Board of Education
State education agency: Nevada Department of Education (NDE)
Chief state school officer: Superintendent of Public Instruction
Nevada System of Higher Education
Launch Years Initiative
States across the country are building math pathways that align student goals, classroom learning, and career opportunities.
Key Action Implementation
Nevada is further in their math pathways implementation than most states.
Cross-Sector Partnerships
of LYI states, as opposed to 63% of others, have cross-sector partnerships that regularly meet and produce state recommendations.
Nevada Expands Math Pathways with Statistics and Data Science
Nevada launched a statistics/data science pathway in postsecondary education to serve students whose academic goals did not align with the traditional STEM pathway.
Where They Started
The task force identified a need for a statistics pathway for students whose goals did not align with the traditional STEM pathway.
Survey results from academic disciplines across Nevada showed a need for a dedicated statistics/data science pathway. Faculty identified an opportunity to provide students whose programs did not require the traditional STEM sequence with a more relevant gateway math option that emphasized analyzing data, interpreting results, and using evidence to make informed decisions.
What They Worked Through
Nevada faculty worked through the design of a statewide gateway statistics course and the support students would need to succeed.
Mathematics faculty worked with disciplines across their institutions to determine what students needed from a gateway statistics course. The group refined learning outcomes, reviewed the existing curriculum, and considered whether a revised or new course would best meet those needs. They also addressed how the course would be cross-listed, paired with corequisite support, and structured without existing math prerequisites so it could serve as a true gateway course.
What They Did
The task force developed a new gateway statistics course and corequisite support and introduced the course statewide.
A working group was convened to develop the statistics course and its corequisite support. By November 2025, the group had completed learning outcomes and course content. The new course was introduced at the corequisite conference in April 2026, helping institutions prepare for implementation.
