Strengthening Research-Informed Decision Making for Mathematics Education
Purpose
This NCSM position paper urges math education leaders to critically evaluate research rather than accept "scientific" labels uncritically. It challenges the "science of math" movement, arguing it falsely parallels the Science of Reading, misrepresents cited studies, relies narrowly on quantitative/test-score evidence, and promotes "explicit instruction" as the sole valid pedagogy – ignoring guided inquiry research and equity concerns. NCSM calls for scrutinizing research sources and methods, advocating a broader, asset-based, multi-pedagogical vision of mathematics education instead.
